use-isomorphic-layout-effect
Advanced tools
A React helper hook for scheduling a layout effect with a fallback to a regular effect for environments where layout effects should not be used (such as server-side rendering).
The use-isomorphic-layout-effect package is a React hook that provides a cross-environment (both browser and server) version of useEffect, which falls back to useEffect during server-side rendering (SSR). This is useful for code that must use layout effects but should not run or cause errors during SSR, such as when using Next.js or other SSR frameworks.
Isomorphic layout effect
This feature allows you to write layout effects that work in both the browser and server environments. The hook will use useLayoutEffect when in the browser and useEffect when on the server, preventing errors during SSR.
import useIsomorphicLayoutEffect from 'use-isomorphic-layout-effect';
function MyComponent() {
useIsomorphicLayoutEffect(() => {
// Your layout effect logic here
}, []);
return <div>My Component</div>;
}
The react-use library is a collection of essential React hooks. It includes useLayoutEffect, which is similar to useIsomorphicLayoutEffect but does not provide the isomorphic functionality for SSR.

$ npm i use-isomorphic-layout-effect
You only need to switch useLayoutEffect
with useIsomorphicLayoutEffect
+ import useIsomorphicLayoutEffect from 'use-isomorphic-layout-effect';
- import { useLayoutEffect } from 'react';
const YourComponent = () => {
+ useIsomorphicLayoutEffect(() => {
- useLayoutEffect(() => {

}, []);
};
